Catching Sight of the Promised Land

Where are you in the Midlife Journey? Are you still in a crisis? Or are you sorting out your life, trying to figure out where to go next?

Here’s a quote from the Midlife Virgin at her blog, “Diary of a Midlife Crisis.”

What is going on is this – I’m getting settled, I’m getting happier about my life. After two very long years, full of confusion and chaos and disarray, I feel like maybe things are finally settling down. I feel like I can kind of see my future, I can feel the beginnings of feeling the future inside me.

I’ve never read this blog before so I have no idea the context out of which this comment was taken, but I thought it so accurately portrayed the transition that we make through the different stages of midlife:

  • Awareness
  • Crisis
  • Sorting Out
  • Vision
  • Action

This woman has so clearly been through a crisis and has spent the past two years struggling through her “sorting out” stage. Remember, it’s this stage that takes the longest period of time, but is also the most important! And now she has reached the “vision” stage of her life. She’s beginning to see her future – and all the possibilities that it holds for her!

The vision stage is a very exciting time in your life. It’s a time when you can start to breathe again. You are filled with hope and expectation for what life has to offer.

Why am I sharing this? Because I know many of you are struggling through that “sorting out” stage. It’s taking much longer than you ever dreamed possible. From a Christian perspective, it’s your “desert experience” – wondering around, not sure where you’re going. Then, miraculously one day, you catch sight of The Promised Land. You haven’t crossed the Jordan River yet to take possession of The Promised Land, but it’s in sight!

As the Lord God said to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” [Joshua 1:9]

Face your fears. Step out of your comfort zone. Don’t get discouraged, but keep moving forward with the confidence that this new life you are about to embark on is there waiting for you. You have a few battles ahead – a few obstacles to still overcome – but it’s yours for the taking. Be strong and courageous! Move into action and you will inhabit the land flowing with milk and honey (or, in your case, the life of your dreams!)

What are you waiting for?
